Remote Dojo Week 3

SO, today we finished our ‘Space-Cat’ game, with added extras from some great input from our beginners group. As of today, though, they’re not ‘beginners’ anymore! We’ve reached the stage with this group where we encourage them to try to come up with their own ideas, and set challenges for themselves which we will try to help them to overcome.

We have sent out some ideas to the group which we suggest they work through in their own time, and we will continue to to meet up online until we are advised that we can resume normal ‘in-person’ meetings. In the next few weeks we plan to move on to some basic web coding and start working with ABB Robot Studio.

Day 2

So today we took on the near-infamous ‘Astro-Cat’. This one ALWAYS give us problems, usually to do with the custom sprites. So we used our online Scratch Studio to upload a version that has the sprites and the background, without the Scratch Blocks. Brian forgot to remove the blocks from the background, though, so the music was still playing! Anyway, we set up a cat sprite that moves, when we press the arrow (cursor) keys on the keyboard, a ‘star’ that appears and dis-appears at random locations, and a bolt of ‘Space Lightning’ that moves down the screen from top to bottom, starting at random locations, and that also disappears when it touches the cat. We also scripted two more sprites – one for instructions on how to play the game, and one that displays a ‘success’ message for when you complete the game.

Next time, starting at 11.00 on Saturday the 25th of April, we’ll answer questions like ‘What happens to the cat when the lightning touches him? How do I pick up stars? When I have collected enough stars, then what happens?’

Press ‘Start’…

At time of writing (7th April 2020), this website is brand new. The World is in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, and our CoderDojo in Mullingar hasn’t hosted a session for several weeks. Schools are closed for at least another 2 weeks – right about now is usually when they’d be closed anyway for Easter Holidays.

We still can’t re-open for ‘business as usual’, but we thought it was about time we came up with a new plan. Check back here soon to find out what we’re up to!
